A showdown of extraordinary talent and chic outfits all in good fun as SYKES held its annual Year-End Celebration (YEC) dubbed “Rockapalooza: Party like a SYKESer” last December 9, 2018 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.

SYKES executives, employees, and special guests descended on the Waterfront grand ballroom in their best rockstar outfits to celebrate the year’s triumphs.

“For me, it’s been the biggest and the best year we’ve ever had. We had the biggest sports fest and we participated in inter-BPO and city competitions. Guess who won? We did! This has been our year. So tonight is our night to celebrate and enjoy all that we’ve done, especially since we are celebrating our fifteenth year. Fifteen years is an accomplishment,” said John Sneed, SYKES Cebu’s Head and Vice President for Area Operations and Shared Services.

Evolution of SYKES Cebu through Dance

One of the most entertaining segment of the Rockapalooza celebration was the Employee Dance Competition.

Seven groups delighted the audience with presentations that traced the evolution of dance through the years.

SYKESers showcased jazz and swing of the 1930s and 1940s, twist of the 1950s, break dancing of the 1980s, hip hop of the 1990s, and current dance moves in a flurry of outfit changes and rhythmic twirls.

This resembled the evolution and continuous growth of SYKES Cebu, from humble beginnings to making its mark as one of the leading BPO in the country.

Dance is definitely part of the rich Filipino culture as presented by Team R2BU, the grand champion, in their presentation. The team incorporated the milestones of SYKES Cebu into their dance in an upbeat, colorful, and dynamic rendition.

Not only did SYKESers enjoy great music and sumptuous food, they also took home amazing giveaways and raffle prizes with winners taking home as much as P10,000 cash.

SYKES Philippines once again gathered its employees not for work but for a fun day with colleagues and families.

Thousands of SYKEsers turned up for the celebration in Cebu that kicked off with a parade filled with the team banners of RYBU Blue Lions, SG&A White Warriors, CSBU Red Transformers, DBBU Pink Panther, MLBU Green Stallions, JNBU Black Immortals, and AMBU Gold Eagles.

The company’s annual Sports Fest and Family Day is aimed at promoting camaraderie, unity, and a healthier lifestyle among its employees.

Grand entrance for SYKES Cebu head

SYKES employees and their families packed the University of the Southern Philippines (USP), venue of the Cebu event last May 6, 2018. The Sportsfest and Family Day in Manila was held at the Ynares Sports Arena and happened in a day before the celebration in Cebu.

Organizers prepped a grand entrance for SYKES Cebu Head and Vice President for Area Operations & Shared Services John Sneed.

The SYKES executive arrived aboard a military jeep and was joined by soldiers from Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in Cebu.

Immediately after Sneed opened the Sportsfest and Family Day, military officers led participants on an Army Dozen Exercise, which consisted of 12 easy yet helpful exercises that served as a warmup for the day’s activities.

Celebrity guests in Manila

It was also a fun day in Manila for SYKEsers as teams vie for the grand award in the first ever headdress competition dubbed “Crowning Glory.”

With participants having only recycled materials, creating an entry was certainly a test of creativity.

Celebrities dropped in on the celebration. Loud cheers greeted Jak Roberto who joined the revelry and delighted the crowd with a song number. In the later part of the event, CCP Bobcats Cheerleading Team and the UST Yellow Jackets Drumline awed the audience with their heart-stopping stunts and more.

Bb. Pilipinas Grand International Nicole Cordoves with UAAP and ABS-CBN Sports Anchor Martin Javier hosted the event.

Cebu needs to develop a pool of skilled workers and adapt to digital disruptions like artificial intelligence (AI) to secure its position as an IT-BPM hub.

These crucial issues that affect the information technology and business process management (IT-BPM) sector will be tackled during the 2018 Transformation Summit scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 16.

“The need for human resource is the most critical of objectives to ensure Cebu sustains its operations as an ICT hub regardless of challenges,” said Gregg Victor Gabison, president of the Cebu IT-BPM.Organization (CIB.O).

He added that a main focus of CIB.O is sustainable growth for ICT in Cebu, and the group had worked on talent development through the years even when it was still known as the Cebu Educational Development Foundation for Information Technology or Cedf-IT.

Transformation Summit topics

Another advocacy of CIB.O right now, according to Gabison, is for Cebu to inject more AI systems in ICT operations.

The summit carries the timely theme “Embracing New Realities” to reflect the need for AI integration and digital innovation in the IT-BPM industry, said CIB.O Managing Director Wilfredo “Jun” Saa, Jr.

The group will bring in Avinash Vashistha, chairman and CEO of Tholons, Inc., to talk about the Super Cities of the World during the 2018 Transformation Summit.

Other forum topics include:

  • Effective Industry-Academe Partnership on Talent Development by Convergys Senior Director for Talent Acquisition Lorelie Juntilla,
  • From the Pioneer to More Complex Services by Sykes Vice President for Area Operations and Shared Services Group John Sneed,
  • Digital Cities of the Philippines by OIC Secretary Eliseo Rio Jr. of the Department of ICT.

AI, high value IT services

Saa also cited the need for IT-BPM companies to shift to high value and complex services, focusing specifically on artificial intelligence.

“AI is here and it’s real. It should be part of the way we do things. We need to do more complex services because a lot of cities, countries compete for simple (IT-BPM) tasks,” he added.

At the same time, the summit will discuss the impact of the K to 12 program on the industry. Saa said Cebu can make use of its senior high graduates to sustain industry growth.

According to Saa, a few pilot Cebu City high schools now implement the Learning English Application for Pinoys or LEAP, and majority of senior high students who undergo LEAP immersion get offered jobs by IT-BPO companies upon graduation.

Registration fees

He encouraged IT-BPM stakeholders to join the summit, which will be held at Bai Hotel. They may register online at www.tscebu.com/registration.

The registration fees for the different sectors are: P2,000 for academe, ICT councils, and local government units; P2,500 for CIB.O members; and P4,000 for non-CIB.O members.

The fee already covers meals and snacks for the plenary sessions and conference kit.
