Young Adult (YA) author Jennifer Smith was at a queue in a convenience store when the inspiration for her latest book Windfall came in the form of a man with stocks of lottery tickets in his hand.
“I’ve always been interested in moments of change, that exact time when someone’s life changes. There’s not a better example of that than through winning the lottery,” she explained in an interview shortly before a book signing event at Ayala Center Cebu.
National Book Store brought another two bestselling authors, Smith and Jasmine Warga, to the Philippines. NBS hosted the book signing events for Smith and Warga last November 11 in Cebu and on November 12 at SM Aura Premier in Taguig.
Smith authored several bestselling young adult novels, including “The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight,” “This Is What Happy Looks Like,” and “The Geography of You and Me.” Warga wrote such books as “My Heart and Other Black Holes” and “Here We Are Now.”

Young Adult book themes
Windfall, which was published in May 2017, revolves around a young woman, Alice, who buys a lottery ticket for her best friend Teddy. It ends up winning him the $140 million but the money soon creates a gap between them.
Warga’s new book Here We Are Now tackles the life of Taliah, who recently meets her biological father Julian. He asks her to go to Indiana with him to meet her dying grandfather. Taliah goes on a journey with her father, and soon learns he wasn’t the father she hoped for all these years.
Her other book My Heart and Other Black Holes touches on such topics as teen romance, mental health, suicide and has been translated into over 20 languages.
Warga said music, though she has no aptitude for it in the way that musicians have, is a common theme of her book because she considers it the closest thing to magic in this world.

Smith and Warga talked about how they became writers, their writing process, inspiration for their books, and favorite authors.
The two said they had a great experience and already tasted a variety of Filipino food. What they haven’t done yet but wanted to do was try the local Jollibee branch.
All of Smith’s and Warga’s books are available at several National Book Store branches in the Philippines.

Kwan is currently promoting his latest book “Rich People Problems.” The novel is about the rich and powerful problems of Singapore.

The entire Shang-Young clan has convened from all corners of the globe to stake claim on their matriarch’s massive fortune. With each family member vying to inherit Tyersall Park—a trophy estate on 64 prime acres in the heart of Singapore—Nicholas’s childhood home turns into a hotbed of speculation and sabotage.
Crazy Rich Asians
Kevin Kwan is the man behind ‘Crazy Rich Asians’, which is now being adapted into a feature film by Ivanhoe Pictures and Color Force, the producers of ‘The Hunger Games’ movies. Its sequel ‘China Rich Girlfriend’ was described by People Magazine as “a field guide to Asia’s uberwealthy echelon and comic satire at its best.”
Kwan was born and raised in Singapore, where he attended Anglo-Chinese School. After obtaining his first degree in creative writing from the University of Houston, Kwan moved to Manhattan to pursue a BFA at Parsons School of Design. Kwan currently resides in Manhattan.
The event is made possible in partnership with SM Seaside City Cebu.

Premium notebooks of various designs and types, high-quality pens, and other writing implements and supplies are now available in Cebu with the opening of the Itoya corner in the National Bookstore branch in Ayala Center Cebu.
Officials of Itoya and National Bookstore led the opening of the store earlier today, June 10.
“We feel truly honored that an iconic brand such as Itoya has partnered with us. We are excited to showcase their carefully curated merchandise with high quality craftsmanship that is sure to rev up the school and work spaces of our customers, especially here in Cebu,” said National Book Store managing director Xandra Ramos-Padilla in a press statement.

Itoya, which is located in the Ginza district, is listed among the must-visit stores in Japan by travel guides, including the Lonely Planet.
“The concept of Itoya products revolves around excellent design, impeccable material, and multi-functionality. Majority of Itoya products are developed in Japan and pass strict quality control to ensure that the design and style meet world-class standards,” National Bookstore said in a statement.

Itoya senior vice president Isamu Suzuki said during the launch that the company has been making premium stationery and writing products for close to 112 years. He said they were the first company in Japan to use the English word “stationery.”
Today, however, Suzuki said the company has become a “premium gift shop” that carries a varied line of products, including:
This is a collection line of ballpoint pens and accessories, mechanical pencils, notebooks, leather jacket for journals, pouches, binders and office supplies and accessories. They come in various matching colors, hence the name, ranging from: Magenta Pink, Sunset Orange, Pear Green, Sky Blue, Navy Blue, and Earth Brown.
This product line traces its origin to the first fountain pen made by Itoya more than 100 years ago. Suzuki said in an interview that the name comes from the character of the universal love story that has had many a would-be Romeo penning love notes to their Juliets.
The company said the Romeo brand was re-launched in 2004 for use of the modern businessmen. It is 100% man-made and uses only premium materials. The Romeo collection also includes pad bands with pen holders, file binders, notebooks, and pencils, and leather products such as wallets, card cases, memo pads, ID holders, and pen cases.
This latest brand “offers the ultimate tools for those who are always on-the-move.”
“The pens are reminiscent of maritime flags that are perfectly paired with the incensed cedar used in the barrel. The collection also includes the “on-the-go” and “street” journals which feature attractive patterns and are light in weight,” the company said.
This line, which features simple designs, is named after the typeface.
“Itoya’s Helvetica products similarly bring in simple and timeless designs while maintaining its smart functionality,” the company said. The Helvetica collection includes ballpoint pens, mechanical pencils, pencil extenders, pen cases, multi-functional pens, clipboards, and dual ring binders.
Itoya’s products were first made available in the Philippines in October 2015. National Book Store Senior Brand Manager Arlene Thay said the brand was doing well among a wide range of Filipino consumers. She said it did well heading to the Christmas seasons when many bought items like the Romeo pens as gifts to bosses or spouses and other special people.
Thay said Itoya was particularly strong among “working executives.”
The Itoya branch in Ayala Center Cebu Cebu is the first outside Manila. Itoya products are currently available in the National Book Store branches in Power Plant Mall, Shangri-la Plaza Mall, SM Aura Premier, and Powerbooks, Greenbelt 4, and will be available this June in Alabang Town Center and Glorietta 1.
