METRO Retail Stores Group, Inc. (MRSGI) recently bagged the Gold Bagwis award from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for its stores in the Visayas.

“Through the Bagwis Award, we aim to inspire retailers to pursue the highest standards in consumer welfare, social responsibility, and quality of customer service. We would like to commend MRSGI for its tireless efforts and innovations to meet and even go beyond the needs of its stakeholders.” said DTI-Cebu OIC-Provincial Director Rose Mae Quiñanola during the awarding at the agency’s office in Cebu City.

Launched in 2006, The Bagwis Program recognizes establishments– supermarkets, department/specialty stores, hardware stores, appliance centers, and DTI-accredited service and repair shops– that consistently uphold responsible business practices and consumer rights.

The program confers three levels of awards, namely, the Bronze Seal, Silver Seal, and Gold Seal. The Gold Seal Award is given to establishments that comply with fair trade laws, establish a consumer relations office in their facilities, demonstrate excellence in social responsibility, and adhere to a given set of elements aligned with ISO 9001.

For practicing good business ethics, adhering to suggested retail processes, and promoting the welfare of their employees, seven Metro Retail Stores in the Visayas region received the program’s highest recognition for the Supermarket section: Metro Mandaue, Super Metro Lapu-Lapu, Super Metro Bogo, Metro Fresh & Easy Mactan, Metro Carmen, Metro Banilad, and Super Metro Carcar.

For the award program’s Department store section, the Gold Seal was conferred to Metro Mandaue, Super Metro Lapu-Lapu, Super Metro Bogo, and Super Metro Carcar.

MRSGI holds the distinction of being the first retail store in the Philippines that has received Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) citations for three of its supermarkets, namely, Metro Alabang, Metro Ayala Cebu, and Metro Market! Market!, ensuring customers are in a clean and sanitized environment when they restock essentials.

Through its Daghang Salamat CSR program, MRSGI has also recognized its own frontliners– maintenance and security personnel, employees, among others– for their dedication to support the company’s efforts to make communities safer.

“Metro may have faced many business challenges in the past few months, but our dedication to excellence stands firm,” said Manuel C. Alberto, President and Chief Operating Officer of MRSGI. “Receiving the most awards under the DTI Bagwis Program among retailers in Cebu and the Visayas region is a testament of the company’s resilience as we are able to provide outstanding quality of service to our customers amid major difficulties.”

These newly received awards give MRSGI a total of 23 Gold Bagwis awards from 2018 to this year. The awards are valid for three years upon conferment.
