Cebu is the “perfect destination” for Chinese tourists because they are into diving and love the water and islands, said AirAsia China, North Asia President Kathleen Tan.

AirAsia launched today its daily Cebu-Shanghai flights at the new Terminal 2 of Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA).

“Cebu has so much to offer. You have a rich culture and amazing, beautiful islands,” said Tan during the inaugural ceremonies. “The Chinese love to eat. Food is very important to them, and shopping.”

“Cebu,” Tan told those gathered at the event, “your city will never be the same again with China coming in.”

AirAsia Cebu-Shanghai

DAILY FLIGHTS TO SHANGHAI. AirAsia launches its daily flights to Shanghai with an inaugural at the newly-opened Terminal 2 of Mactan Cebu International Airport. Present during the event are (center stage, from left) AirAsia Philippines Chairperson Maan Hontiveros, Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Antonio Chiu, Cebu Vice Governor Agnes Magpale, AirAsia China and North Asia President Kathleen Tan, Chinese Embassy Deputy Consul Wu Xiaomin, and AirAsia Philippines CEO Dexter Comendador.

Long-term growth

AirAsia Philippines CEO Capt. Dexter Comendador said the new terminal provides the airline “great capacity for long-term growth and expansion in Cebu as AirAsia’s hub.”

He said AirAsia now has 3 planes based in Cebu, which is the most outside Manila, ground equipment to support it, and about 200 employees.

“It’s a huge investment for us but we’re very happy that we did the right thing in connecting with China. It’s the largest market.” Comendador said.

AirAsia Shanghai-Cebu

MUCH TO OFFER. Cebu has much to offer to tourists based in China, said AirAsia China, North Asia President Kathleen Tan.

Market doing very well

He said they initially only wanted to divert passengers from Boracay, with the closure of the island in April, but “we found out that the market is working very well.”

“It’s a good problem for me,” Comendador said, “because when Boracay opens, I will need to find other planes to fly that route because I cannot, I will not, pull out the routes that we have established as alternate to Boracay.”

Tan described the development as “very exciting” because the airline has been able to connect “Cebu to a very important market. China is now ranked as one of the biggest outbound travel market in the world.”

Encouraging response

She described the initial response as very encouraging, with the inaugural flight from Shanghai to Cebu set to arrive past midnight at 99% of load capacity with 179 passengers.

Tan said forward sales also show good booking rates. She said they are aiming to have at least 80% load factor for the routes.

She said the Chinese “now have a big appetite for travel.” It is a “lifestyle commodity” especially for travelers from Shanghai.

She also said that she learned from Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Antonio Chiu that after they opened their routes to China, there have been Chinese business people who expressed interest in investing in Cebu.

AirAsia Cebu-Shanghai

CEBU IS READY. Cebu Vice Governor Agnes Magpale said Cebu is ready for the influx of tourists from China with the new flights by AirAsia.

Young, independent travelers

Tan said many of their customers are those born in the 1980s and 1990s and they see more independent and young Chinese travelers. To engage them, she encouraged those in the industry to go digital, mobile, and social.

Cebu Vice Governor Agnes Magpale welcomed the new routes as opportunities for Cebu to get more exposure to the Chinese market.

Magpale said that with the opening of Terminal 2, Cebu can accommodate more international flights.

AirAsia Shanghai-Cebu

EXPANSION. AirAsia Philippines CEO Capt. Dexter Comendador said the new Terminal 2 of MCIA provides the airline “great capacity for long-term growth and expansion in Cebu as AirAsia’s hub.”

Cebu is ready

“Cebu is really, really ready for more Chinese tourists,” she said during the event.

“With these added flights, we know that we will hit our 10 million mark for Cebu. We’ve asked the hotels, the resorts and they are really ready. The Provincial Government as well as the City Government are right behind the business community to make Cebu ready,” she added.

Chinese Embassy Deputy Consul Wu Xiaomin said that last year, the number of tourists from China to the Philippines increased 75%, the fastest growing among foreign markets.

“Tourism brings economic benefits both to the host country and the tourists’ home country,” he said. “I believe that improved relations between the Philippines and China is a key factor in the improved tourism market.”

SYKES Philippines once again gathered its employees not for work but for a fun day with colleagues and families.

Thousands of SYKEsers turned up for the celebration in Cebu that kicked off with a parade filled with the team banners of RYBU Blue Lions, SG&A White Warriors, CSBU Red Transformers, DBBU Pink Panther, MLBU Green Stallions, JNBU Black Immortals, and AMBU Gold Eagles.

The company’s annual Sports Fest and Family Day is aimed at promoting camaraderie, unity, and a healthier lifestyle among its employees.

This year’s SYKES Sportsfest theme is “Supremacy,” which fits with the company ideals to continue to push talents to become the leader in their respective crafts and fields, said Sykes Asia, Inc. Branding and Communications Director Cecile Venancio.

SYKES employees and their families packed the University of the Southern Philippines (USP), venue of the Cebu event last May 6, 2018. The Sportsfest and Family Day in Manila was held at the Ynares Sports Arena and happened in a day before the celebration in Cebu.

Organizers prepped a grand entrance for SYKES Cebu Head and Vice President for Area Operations & Shared Services John Sneed.

The SYKES executive arrived aboard a military jeep and was joined by soldiers from Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in Cebu.

Immediately after Sneed opened the Sportsfest and Family Day, military officers led participants on an Army Dozen Exercise, which consisted of 12 easy yet helpful exercises that served as a warmup for the day’s activities.

Celebrity guests in Manila

It was also a fun day in Manila for SYKEsers as teams vie for the grand award in the first ever headdress competition dubbed “Crowning Glory.”

With participants having only recycled materials, creating an entry was certainly a test of creativity.

Celebrities dropped in on the celebration. Loud cheers greeted Jak Roberto who joined the revelry and delighted the crowd with a song number. In the later part of the event, CCP Bobcats Cheerleading Team and the UST Yellow Jackets Drumline awed the audience with their heart-stopping stunts and more.

Bb. Pilipinas Grand International Nicole Cordoves with UAAP and ABS-CBN Sports Anchor Martin Javier hosted the event.

Sykes kids meantime enjoyed the inflatable area and there was a photo booth for snap and selfie enthusiasts.

Other remarkable events that happened in Manila were the lighting of the torch and the oathtaking by athletes led by Director for Site Operations Red del Rosario.

SYKES is a leading BPO (business process outsourcing) company in the country and among the first to put up a branch outside Manila. To date, it has employed over 15,000 talents and is still growing nationwide.

Condo living has become popular in Cebu and SM Home helps unit owners make the most of the lifestyle through a series of talks by design experts this weekend at the Northwing Atrium of SM City Cebu.

Cebuano designers Maybelline Te, Hannah Lim, Janet Lo-Lee, and Kate Ngo will share tips on choosing colors and furniture or hiring design help as well as secrets to maximizing space and sprucing up a starter condominium during the SM Home Design Series: The Essentials of Condo Living from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. this February 24 and 25.

SM Home Design Series

DESIGN IDEAS. SM Home assistant vice president for marketing Tom Castañeda at the Northwing Atrium where home vignettes have been set up to showcase condo interior design ideas.

One goal of this campaign is to show customers that everything they need for their homes is available at SM Home, said the brand’s assistant vice president for marketing Tom Castañeda.

SM Home Design Series

Since a lot of people who come into the store may be overwhelmed by all the available options especially because they don’t have design backgrounds, SM Home launched the Design Series last September in Makati and brings it to Cebu for the first time this weekend, he added.

SM Home Design Series: The Essentials of Condo Living

BEDROOM AND LIVING ROOM. The bedroom was designed by Hannah Lim, the living room by Maybelline Te.

The event’s theme highlights the growing popularity of condo living not just in Makati but also in Cebu.

“These days, it’s common to see condo sizes diminish in size. They’re getting tinier and tinier! And as developers offer less space, homeowners have to figure out how to best maximize their spaces, how they can avoid sacrificing some of their needs without feeling cooped up,” Castañeda said.

Condo living essentials

Castañeda said those who come to the SM Home Design Series: The Essentials of Condo Living at the Northwing Atrium either today or tomorrow, Sunday, can expect free talks from a powerhouse of Cebuano design talents, check out styled home vignettes that demonstrate great condo design, raffle prizes, and an additional 10 percent off on all items at the SM Home in both SM City Cebu and SM Seaside City braches from Feb. 22 to March 8, 2018.

“Since small condos demand creativity when it comes to optimizing space, SM Home has turned to design experts to help highlight ways people can do that in their own homes through a series of condo-like setups, as well as expert-led talks,” he said.

SM Home Design Series: The Essentials of Condo Living

KITCHEN, DINING. The kitchen was designed by Janet Lo, the dining by Kate Ngo.

Beyond the weekend, SM Home also has a visual display person who is trained on interior design and offers free consultation to prospective customers.

Cebuano talents who designed the home vignettes now displayed at the Northwing are Te for the living room, Lim for the bedroom, Lo-Lee for the kitchen, and Ngo for the dining area.

Bedroom by Hannah Lim

A compact bedroom for a childless couple in their late thirties, interior designer Hannah Lim’s iteration of a husband and wife’s love for adventure are punches of refreshing pink and green, as well as rustic wood elements. Hannah Lim is the founder of HL Designs, a Cebu-based studio specializing in model units and common areas for real estate showrooms.

Dining Area by Kate Ngo

Dining Area by Kate Ngo

The furniture designer managed to apply depth to a limiting space. Instead of sticking to the basics, Kate injected drama to an otherwise fuss-free condo dining area by choosing a Scandinavian-inspired dining set which also complements the kitchen, amidst an overflow of leafy foliage and rose gold hang lights—an appetizing concoction of swanky and cozy.

A minimalist maven, the head designer of Janet Lo Lee Design Studio lends her signature style to her interpretation of a Scandinavian chic condo kitchen. An encompassing warm and inviting theme, the area intelligently makes use of space with streamlined, functional fixtures.

Living Room by Maybelline Te

Living Room by Maybelline Te

The layering of colors, textures and furniture is what makes Maybelline Te’s condo living room interpretation an exciting one. A designer and manufacturer of home furniture and accessories, Maybelline knows how to stir interest through the depth of decor elements—in this case, a blue tufted sofa bed atop a hot pink hairy rug, two differently-leveled coffee tables placed side by side, and the use of muted pinks and yellows that tempers a frivolous lounge area just right.

Top Philippine beach and island destinations like El Nido and Coron in Palawan, Gigantes in Iloilo, Panglao in Bohol, and Kalanggaman in Leyte will soon be minutes away with the opening of Air Juan seaplane flights from Cebu.

Air Juan President John Gutierrez led the unveiling of the company’s seaplane terminal located at Filinvest’s South Road Properties on January 20, 2018. Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña was the guest of honor during the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

He said they plan to start flight services from the seaplane terminal to the country’s most beautiful destinations within the first quarter of the year. These also include such places as Sumilon in Oslob, Malapascua, Candijay in Anda, and Lakawon.

Air Juan flights

Air Juan seaplane services from Cebu will supplement landplane services started last June 2017. Beginning in the middle of last year, Air Juan opened scheduled flights from Mactan International Airport to Bantayan, Biliran, Maasin, Sipalay, Siquijor, and Tagbilaran.

Gutierrez said they will soon fly to Catbalogan as well. The Air Juan fleet consists of six Cessna Grand Caravans, four of which are amphibious.

He added that the landplane can carry a maximum of 12 passengers while the seaplane can have as many as nine.

Competitive rates

Air Juan does not compete with other airline companies but with the country’s ferry service.

“Biliran is a five-hour boat ride but Air Juan reduces the travel time to 45 minutes,” according to Gutierrez.

He added that their landplane rates are competitive with ferry fares but seaplane flights are slightly more expensive. The average one-way fare from the Mactan, Cebu airport to Tagbilaran, for example, is from P1,500 to P2,500, while ferries charge around P800.

“We’re not a budget airline but the most convenient. You can’t put a price on a person’s time,” Gutierrez said, citing that they can do in around 20 minutes the four to five hours land travel to Kandaya Resort in Daanbantayan.

JUST MINUTES AWAY. Top beach and island destinations will soon be just minutes away from Cebu with the opening of Air Juan seaplane flights.

SRP seaplane terminal

Air Juan already has hubs in Manila, Cebu, and Puerto Princesa in Palawan. While Cebu services were started last year, Air Juan operated flights out of Palawan starting four years ago.

Gutierrez said they are targeting not just foreign guests but also locals for Air Juan land and sea flights.

The seaplane terminal in SRP will provide travellers with the most convenient way to island hop, he pointed. He promised that Air Juan scheduled flights will take off even with only one passenger.

CONVENIENT. “We’re not a budget airline but the most convenient. You can’t put a price on a person’s time,” Air Juan President John Gutierrez tells reporters and bloggers during yesterday’s event.

USC Boys Class ‘78 marks 40th year, holds grand reunion

The University of San Carlos (USC) Boys Class ‘78 is throwing the grandest reunion, celebrating its 40th year on January 18 to 22, 2018.

“High school is the best. It’s when friendship is pure. There are no inhibitions.” This is how Mel Sarmiento, who volunteered to initiate the gathering, remembers their high school days.

Sarmiento took the role after Ed Pebenito, who organized the reunion for both 25th and 35th year, migrated to the US.

“The reunion was supposed to be every 10 years. So the next would have been on our 45th year or perhaps celebrate 50 years. But we’re not getting any younger. We thought why not celebrate our grand reunion while we’re still fit, can play and enjoy,” he said.

“We’re already at our retirable age. Sad to say that a good number of our batch are not with us anymore. It’s high time to enjoy life. We tried our best to work hard, to provide for our family. This (reunion) is also for us to de-stress,” added Sarmiento.

University of San Carlos (USC) Boys High Class '78

University of San Carlos (USC) Boys High Class ’78 led by Mel Sarmiento, Bebot Ruiz, Agul Espinosa, and Boogie Tuaño went on a mission and gathered fellow Carolinians in Las Vegas, Nevada as part of its preparations for their 40th Grand Reunion. With a theme “USC Boys High Class ’78 goes Retro @ 40”, the reunion will be held here in Cebu City on January 18 to 22, 2018.

The preparations

What is quite challenging with his task, admits Sarmiento, is gathering people as he has lost contact with some people while a few others are unresponsive.

And so the preparations started early. The first talk about their reunion plans happened in December 2016. “We opened a chatroom for our batch and from there we assigned committees. We named point persons per area,” Sarmiento said.

The organizing group also prioritized funding and checked their costing. They decided not to solicit and instead go for corporate sponsorship as they want to provide free tickets to the event and encourage attendees.

Sarmiento and three others even went to Las Vegas on a mission. The purpose of their visit was to encourage their batchmates already residing there to come home to Cebu and join their grand reunion.

Retro at 40

The theme for the Grand Reunion is “USC Boys Class ‘78 Goes Retro at 40”. It will be a five-day activity and some of the highlights to look forward to are Pinoy Olympics, Jamming Night, Feeding Program, Sportsfest with tennis, golf, billiard, table tennis and basketball tournaments.

Sarmiento said they expect 176 batchmates to attend their grand reunion. “We have batchmates coming from abroad, Luzon and other parts of the country. We want to maximize their stay here that is why we have outlined various activities for them to enjoy.”

Whether you’re planning a local trip or going to any country in the world, get great deals in airfare and tour packages to your chosen destination during the Cebu Travel Catalogue International (CTCI) 2018 from Jan. 26-28 at Ayala Center Cebu.

The Cebu Alliance of Tour Operation Specialists (CATOS) and Cebu Travel and Tours Association (CTTA) strengthened their alliance to bring about an exceptional three-day travel show that will serve as a one-stop-shop for travellers.

CATOS President Alice Queblatin said the cooperation between the two organizations have resulted in member agencies coming up with tour packages for inbound and outbound that are varied and affordable for the Cebu Travel Catalogue International.

“The expansion of the airport and opening of more routes by domestic and international airlines will make Cebu a top travel hub. With all these, we see the need to strengthen not just tourism products but also the collaboration among industry stakeholders. We want to make travel to and from Cebu a dynamic experience,” she added.

TRAVEL DEALS. Organizers of the Cebu Travel Catalogue International old a press conference on the three-day travel show that will serve as a one-stop-shop for travellers.

Tour, airfare, cruise deals

Tour packages to any point in the globe, promo airfares for local and international destinations, and luxury cruise deals are among the products on offer during the travel fair, according to CTTA Auditor Aida Uy.

The different travel and tour agencies will also offer discounted supplemental services for visa and other travel needs.

Uy said that those who show up during the three-day event will get freebies and have a chance to win raffle prizes.

CATOS Vice President Marget Villarica said the Cebu Travel Catalogue International 2018 encourages Cebuanos to visit local places not just international destinations. The tourism offices of Central Luzon, Eastern Visayas, Cordillera Administrative Region, Central Visaya, Bohol, and Davao will also be present to provide information on travel to their respective areas.

With more domestic carriers opening new routes, it has become easier and more convenient to go from Cebu to such places as Batanes, El Nido, and Catanduanes, added CTTA Secretary Cookie Chan.

Popular destinations

For international destinations, Chan added, places with cool temperatures are popular with Philippine travellers during the Holy Week and summer break.

Travellers can expect fantastic deals on springtime travel to South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan when they book during the three-day travel fair. Jeju, which doesn’t require a visa from Filipinos, is also popular and tour packages to this South Korean destination on chartered flights will also be on offer.

CTTA Public Relations Officer Sheila Colmenares, who gave a rundown on the different activities during CTCI 2018, said there will be stage activities and entertainment shows. The travel fair will formally open with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the first day, January 26.

BPI cardholders get the added advantage of booking airfare and tour packages under a zero percent interest three-month installment plan, according to CTTA Vice President Baby Dy.

CTTA President Alan Carvajal urged Cebuanos to take advantage of the exceptional offers by planning their 2018 trips during the Cebu Travel Catalogue International 2018 from January 26-28 at Ayala Center Cebu.

The fluvial procession, when the miraculous image of the Sto. Niño is transported through the Mactan Channel, is a much-anticipated Sinulog event. This year, the procession will be held on Saturday, January 20.

One of the best places to view the annual event is at the Mandani Bay Boardwalk. Everyone is welcome to join the festivities at the Boardwalk. This is the third year that Mandani Bay is hosting the fluvial parade from the vantage point on the mainland, part of its participation in the Fiesta Señor and Sinulog celebrations.

Mandani Bay’s participation is also part of the City of Mandaue’s overall safety, security, and logistics program for the annual observance of the Feast of the Señor St. Niño.

At the heart of the development is the Green Promenade, a wide tree-lined avenue that cuts through the centre of the property, lending the environment a refreshing spirit that encourages an active lifestyle amongst residents. The Boardwalk enables relaxation, evening walks and lounging to a spectacular view of the Mactan Channel.

Best view

The Mandani Bay development presents the best view of the galleon, which, this year, will be the Philippine Navy’s BRP Bagobo AT-293, bearing the image of the Holy Child and other seacraft, as it is an unobstructed stretch on the mainland bank of the Mactan Channel.

Gates open at 4:30 am. Sinulog street dancing, drum beaters and songs will engage guests as everyone waits for the procession to pass through.

Food will be available onsite. Concessionaires will have food booths serving a variety of meals and delicacies. Guests with invitations will be served breakfast.

The event at Mandani Bay will be aired live on Y101 with Jiggy Jr.’s Jiggy in the Morning.

Mandani Bay is Cebu’s most promising development. With a 500-meter water frontage facing the Mactan Channel, this world-class 20-hectare development has a stunning view of the coast and encompassing cityscape.

Premium mixed-use community

Built around a lifestyle of connectivity, this premium mixed-use community hosts a series of expansive podium blocks interconnected by footbridges. Residential towers rise from each of the podiums’ amenity roof decks, whilst street front retail thrives along the wide boulevards.

At the base, the buildings are also connected by a system of exclusive parking spaces weaving throughout the property. For strolling aboveground or driving and parking underground, Mandani Bay provides complete convenience allowing time for loftier pursuits.
