Carrier-grade Smart Wifi is now available in Metro Manila and 40 other provinces, following PLDT wireless arm Smart Communication Inc.’s (Smart) ramped-up roll-out of the service in the Metro Rail Transit (MRT), government offices, hospitals, schools, restaurants, airports and transportation hubs, and other key high-traffic areas across the country this year.

Hundreds of establishments nationwide now have Smart Wifi, including the 13 stations of the MRT, where around 230,000 commuters can already benefit daily from the service.

“Carrier-grade” means that Smart Wifi implements a network infrastructure following world-class standards, allowing mobile devices to experience fast and secure internet connection with high reliability, connectivity, and coverage. This also allows customers in areas where there are large numbers of users like airports, bus terminals, and entertainment centers to experience Value Added Services such as shopping, gaming, and streaming, among others.

Capacity

A backhaul capacity of up to 100 megabits per second (expandable to 1 gigabit per second) allows users to have the best digital experience when accessing their emails and social media accounts, downloading and sending files on-the-go, and checking out relevant digital content and services online.

“Smart and PLDT continue to be at the forefront of the country’s digital transformation by providing Filipinos with quality internet connection wherever they go,” said Jovy Hernandez, Senior Vice President and Head of Enterprise for PLDT and Smart.

“With the help of our partners and government, we continue to invest in ICT infrastructure to help improve the quality of life of Filipinos all over country,” Hernandez added.

In June this year, Smart, in cooperation with the Department of Information and Communications Technology, launched the Smart Wifi service in the MRT stations and along the stretch of EDSA to improve the mobile experience of commuters traversing the country’s busiest highway.

LGUs powered by Smart Wifi

Carrier-grade Smart Wifi has also been installed in various locations in Benguet, Batangas, Laguna, Cebu, Cagayan, Cavite, Ilocos Norte, Bulacan, Palawan, Leyte, Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Iloilo, Davao, and Metro Manila, making online government services more accessible.

“By making quality internet access available to more Filipinos through Smart Wifi, we are helping make the delivery of public service more efficient, and contributing to the development of rural areas,” Hernandez said.

Smart Wifi is also available at the National Bureau of Investigation’s (NBI) headquarters in Manila, as well as in its offices in Bacolod, Bulacan, Batangas, Cavite, Pampanga, Cebu, Benguet, Leyte, Isabela and Sarangani.

The nationwide rollout of Smart Wifi complements Smart’s ongoing rollout of LTE and 3G facilities across the country, which has significantly improved the quality of Smart’s voice and SMS services, as well as its mobile Internet coverage and quality.

Smart Wifi

TRAVELERS passing through the four terminals of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport and key domestic airports across the country have been able to use Smart Wifi to access their flight details, research about their destinations, and keep in touch with their loved ones via their social media accounts while on the go.

Smart Wifi in schools

Students have also been able to access Smart Wifi in their schools, where they have been able to use the carrier-grade connection for their research papers and other school projects.

“With Smart Wifi in schools, colleges and universities, we are equipping our students with the best connection to help them with their research projects and other school tasks,” Hernandez said.

Smart Wifi is now available in over 40 schools nationwide, including Adamson University, De La Salle University, UP Diliman, Ateneo de Naga, Pangasinan State University in Lingayen and Alaminos, Divine Word College in Laoag, Letran Calamba, Southern Luzon State University, Cebu Institute of Technology University, Eastern Visayas State University, Sacred Heart-Ateneo de Cebu, University of Cebu, University of Negros Occidental Recoletos, West Visayas State University, Bukidnon State University, and Holy Cross of Davao College, among others.

Boosting health facilities

Patients and their families have also been able to access online services in hospitals nationwide via Smart Wifi, which is available in Asian Hospital, Bacolod Adventist Medical Center, Bacoor Doctors Medical Center, Cardinal Santos Medical Center, Cebu Doctors University, Central Luzon Doctor’s Hospital, Davao Doctors Hospital, De Los Santos Medical Center, Doctors Hospital Bacolod, Dr Jesus M Delgado Hospital, Emilio Aguinaldo Medical Center, Lipa Medix, Marikina Valley Medical Center, Philippine Orthopedic, and West Metro Medical Center.

“Smart Spots”

Over 60 entertainment hubs called “Smart Spots” have also been launched, providing super speed Smart Wifi to more than 500 restaurants, resorts and other entertainment establishments across the country, where customers have been able to use Smart Wifi to keep their social media feeds updated while wining and dining.

Smart Spots have been launched in resorts in the surfing town of La Union such as Fatwave Surf Resort, San Juan Surf Resort, Sebay Surf Central, Flotsam & Jetsam, and Planet G; restaurants and food hubs around the metro like Streat Maginhawa, The Yard Underground in Pasig and Quezon City, Kalye1 Abad Santos Food Park, Open Kitchen in Congressional and Cubao, The Vibe Gastro Hub in Quezon City, and Arca Yard in Valenzuela City, among others; and in lifestyle destinations in the Visayas and Mindanao, like Damosa Complex and Matina Town Square in Davao City, The Marketplace in Bacolod, One Providence Lifestyle District in Cagayan de Oro, and Larsian in Cebu.

The importance of high-speed internet connectivity in places of convergence is emphasized by the varying needs of travelers.

A number of people want to stay updated with news from all over while traveling and others choose not to interrupt their work while on the go. There are also those who want to stay connected with their loved ones especially when away from home.

Smart Wifi addresses these needs and more by offering fast and free internet in many of the country’s major transport hubs like airports starting July. Passengers and government transportation executives alike welcome this latest development from PLDT subsidiary and leader in mobile Smart Communications.

Flight status, weather

Smart recently reinforced its data connectivity in Davao City’s Francisco Bangoy International Airport, and Misamis Oriental’s Laguindingan Airport. Other airports across the country will also have their connectivity upgraded in the coming weeks.

Lisa Chavez, human resource executive, always likes to be in the loop on the status of her flight, the weather, and other updates relevant to traveling.

She said that the excitement of traveling for leisure also brings in a number of unpredictable and sometimes annoying developments—like delays in flights. “I always want to be ready for that,” she said.

The myriad discoveries of local tourists like Chavez, who was visiting Davao from Manila for the weekend can be instantly shared. “I can talk to my friends about the Blugre durian dessert that I ate, and I can also Instagram breathtaking views in Eden Nature Park!”

Vanessa Villaflores, a Filipino expatriate worker bound for Japan, says Smart Wifi makes her feel connected with her family—like she never left home.

Plan trip

Free access to Internet in airports, she said, allows her to plan her trip while she is sitting idle in airports. “Waiting becomes less boring, too!” she said.

“Smart Wifi with high-speed Internet connectivity will give quality online time during pre-departure, for all. But it is all the more beneficial for frequent travelers like me. I can post real-time updates of my travel through social media platforms, especially videos, in no time,” said Vincent Tom Udasco, a photographer and blogger from Cagayan de Oro City.

With Smart Wifi, working people on the go will never feel disconnected or away from their offices.

Stay in touch, share moments

“It goes a long way if you consider that many travelers stay idle in the waiting area and in boarding gates. People traveling for business can continue working like they’ve never left their offices. Travelers seeking leisure and fun can stay in touch with their friends and share memories in an instant. With a bandwidth of up to 1 gigabit per second, Smart Wifi makes every minute of travel experiences productive and meaningful,” said Finina Tabuena-Gorres, VP, PLDT and Smart enterprise customer operations management sector.

Vanessa Villaflores, an OFW who will be leaving for Japan, said that Smart Wifi makes her feel connected to her family—like she’s still at home. “Facebook is my way of connecting with my family when I’m away. Smart Wifi complements my mobile data services, allowing me to message my loved ones and share photos and updates to them,” she said.

More than connectivity, Smart Wifi enhances passenger experiences, giving the country’s tourism sector a boost. After all, a tourist’s impression of a country will largely be based on the first and last experience of his destination. Smart Wifi enables them to have that full digital experience for more meaningful journeys. (Press Release)

Smart to spend P1 billion for nationwide Smart Wifi rollout

PLDT subsidiary Smart Communications (Smart) is rapidly widening the footprint of its Smart Wifi service in key transport hubs, government offices, and business establishments across the country.

Smart has earmarked close to P1 billion for the rollout, which forms part of PLDT’s P43-billion capital expenditure program for this year alone.

Smart WiFi hotspots

Smart Wifi public hotspots are currently undergoing upgrades in all the four terminals of Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay City; Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao; Iloilo International Airport; Bacolod-Silay International Airport in Negros Occidental; and Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport in Negros Oriental.

Smart WiFi is also now available for use by waiting passengers at the terminals of major bus companies including Alps, Five Star Bus, Isarog Bus, Jam Liner, Philtranco, and Victory Liner.

Aside from major transport hubs, Smart Wifi has also expanded to cover more public areas, such as city halls, schools, and establishments such as malls, restaurants, and coffee shops, among many others, addressing the growing demand for more public Wifi hotspots in the country.

Improve access, coverage

“Over the past months, we have aggressively broadened the Smart Wifi footprint through our key partnerships with government institutions and business establishments, consequently improving internet access and coverage nationwide,” said Eric R. Alberto, Executive Vice President at PLDT and Smart, and ePLDT President and CEO.

“The Smart Wifi rollout complements our long-standing efforts to give Filipinos a seamless digital experience, while providing businesses and institutions solutions that suit their needs, and a platform to reach out to a wider audience,” he said.

Internet for All

“Smart has built a solid reputation of connecting Filipinos, and Smart Wifi is very much part of our commitment to make ‘Internet for All’ happen through faster, more reliable, and more accessible products and services,” said Kat Luna-Abelarde, FVP and Wireless Consumer Operations Head at Smart.

Beyond providing internet access to as many people as possible, Smart Wifi is also designed as an essential tool for small and medium enterprises and institutions.

“With more people using Wifi provided by establishments they patronize, Wifi connectivity has been proven to contribute to business growth,” said Alberto. “Smart Wifi is designed to do this and more, by equipping SMEs and various organizations with an indispensable tool to engage customers, build loyalty, and gather significant information that will help them understand customer needs.”

With Smart Wifi, users can take advantage of free connectivity for an initial number of minutes, after which the service allows them to conveniently purchase credits from Smart to extend and boost their internet session.

The rapid expansion of Smart Wifi is supported by PLDT’s robust and resilient fixed and wireless networks, backed by the country’s most extensive fiber optic footprint spanning over 100,000 kilometers, and its three-year network expansion program to deliver faster, more reliable, and more affordable internet services to more Filipinos nationwide.
