Stinky Cebu? Sue City Hall

AN official of the Department of Environment nad Natural Resources told residents and businessmen affected by the stench of the Inayawan landfill that they can sue the CEbu City government for violating Republict Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management ACt of 2001.

Engr. Marco Andrew Silveron, chief of the Solid Waste Management Section of EMB 7, said RA 9003 requires LGUs to implement solid waste management programs and the closure of open dumpsites.

If residents living there are affected by the dumpsite’s operations, they have the right to file a complaint against the LGU if they fail to implement the law. Engr. Marco Andrew Silveron.

Mediaman accuses tourist cop of threat

GMA radio reporter and Cebu Daily News correspondent Norman Mendoza accused SPO2 Esnang Sarapuddin of the Lapu-Lapu Tourist Police of threatening him during a demolition last Friday. The two already had a previous encounter in May when Mendoza tried to get the story of a British national who hit a Singaporean with a wrench. The cop said he merely asked Mendoza, whom he accused of being arrogant, to show an identification card per the instruction of his police chief.

Mendoza said Sarappudin indirectly threatened him and has requested Lapu-Lapu City Police Office director Senior Supt. Rommel Cabagnot to reassign him.

USC eyes rehab of Tejero creek

The University of San Carlos has identified the Tejero Creek as its pilot area for its MEtro Cebu Rivers and Creeks Rehabilitation Program. USC is teaming up with Dow Chemical Co of the US and Barangay Tinago for the rehab of the Estero de Parian and has started gathering samples from three sites.

Through water characterization, we can determine what exactly are the pollutants in the river, we can ddetermine what exactly are the pollutants in the river as well as the level of pollution there by translating it to numbers and using different paramenters. After which, that’s the time we will find the technology appropriate to clean these pollutants. Ricardo Fornis, assistant dean of the USC College of Engineering.
