Fitflop marks 10 years of creating footwear for ‘superwomen’

Be it mother or daughter, wife or lover, entrepreneur or business executive, best friend or mentor, women play multiple roles on a daily basis and Fitflop promises to be there for them every step of the way.

Fitflop, which recently celebrated 10 years of providing superwomen with great footwear, aims to give them the energy and confidence to go further and be absolutely prepared for whatever their busy lives may throw at them, said its global marketing director Louise Barnes during the Manila leg of a series of events known as #SuperWomenNights.

She added that as the brand marks the start of another decade, it comes out with a wide range of products that now includes a whole new category of footwear.

WIDE RANGE. Fitflop global marketing director Louise Barnes (right) said that as the brand marks the start of another decade, it comes out with a wide range of products that now includes a whole new category of footwear – athletic catergory.

New Fitflop products

“We’re entering the athletic category in a big way and we’re doing that with lightweight sneakers and ballerinas. We’ve developed brand new products that will change the way you think of Fitflop,” Barnes said.

According to her, the new Fitflop products are super light, anatomically contoured to cover the feet and have front and back cushioning, and come in a host of beautiful bold and bright colors. This is made possible by Fitflop’s all-new trademark iQushion technology, which is a micro-bubble foam impact cushion.

Fitflop has sold over 35 million pairs of shoes and is now in 63 countries, added Barnes, citing that the whole idea of the brand was about empowering women.

“Our founder Marcia Kilgore, she’s really our original superwoman. She strongly believes in supporting women from the ground up with great footwear,” Barnes said.

Brand milestones

FitFlop regional brand manager Melody Tanjimenez said the brand celebrates several milestones in 2017: its 10th year anniversary, launch of the Spring-Summer Collection, a million Facebook followers just in Southeast Asia alone.

She added that the brand’s growth was an incredible milestone especially since it only had a small following in Multiply when it started in 2007.

“They believed in the brand and we were able to build the brand to what it is today through them,” Tanjimenez also said.

FitFlop Superwomen campaign

#ForSuperwomen. The company brought in the Southeast Asian winners of the #ForSuperwomen promo, a social media contest that asked Fitflop lovers to nominate the superwomen in their lives, to the regional launch of the #SuperwomenNights in Manila in March.

Southeast Asian markets

Tanjimenez said the Primer Group of Companies, which distributes the Fitflop brands in Southeast Asia, also has its own milestones.

The first Fitflop free standing store it opened back in 2010 at the SM Mall of Asia has grown to 30 stores across its Southeast Asian markets.

Primer Group distributes Fitflop footwear in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Brunei, Myanmar, and the Philippines

Superwomen campaign

Fitflop is working with Uma Thurman, the brand’s first celebrity ambassador, for the spring-summer 2017 collection and the superwomen campaign.

Barnes said they picked Thurman because she is also an advocate of women empowerment and her values are aligned with that of the brand.

“She (Thurman) absolutely embodies strength, confidence, total control. She is also a multitasking mother of three and represents iconic characters on stage,” she further said.

Contest winners

It also brought in the Southeast Asian winners of the #ForSuperwomen promo, a social media contest that asked Fitflop lovers to nominate the superwomen in their lives, to the regional launch of the #SuperwomenNights in Manila.

In a toast to the winners, Camille Karaan, vice president for Primer International Management Ltd., said that for superwomen, everything is possible.

“We have superwomen all around us. They are mothers, sisters, friends, and even strangers,” she added.

Local arts and crafts, bazaars, an e-bike parade, organic farmers’ market, food booths, and live music will mark the holding of the Earth Day celebration in Cebu from April 21-22, 2017 at the University of the Philippines Cebu Campus.

This will be the third year that Earth Day is celebrated in Cebu, and it carries the theme “Pag-amuma sa Inahang Kalikopan,” said Japamala Arnaldo of Art Cebu.

Art Cebu is one of the organizers of Earth Day Cebu, which advocates for a healthy lifestyle and greener environment. The goal of the event is to build a community that has a high awareness of climate change and other environmental threats to the planet.

Arnaldo calls on Cebuanos to join the celebration and enjoy the activities they’ve lined up for the two days.

Earth Day highlights

A panel discussion by various climate speakers, including Prof. Henry Espiritu of PCAP, Jakki Lucero of Climate Reality Project, Dada Dharmavedananda of PROUT and Ecology, JCI Cebu Sinulo, and Francis Sollano of Youth for Livable Cebu at UP Cebu’s AS Conference Hall, will happen on the first day, April 21. It will run from 1:30-4:00 p.m. and end with a fellowship meal in the form of a vegetarian boodle fight.

One of the highlights of Earth Day will be the Cebu Farmers Market (CFM) on the second day, April 22.

On that day, according to Ma. Rowena Clara Ebdani of CFM, Cebu’s organic farmers will sell naturally grown local produce at the UP Cebu Campus grounds.

CFM already holds a regular market for farmer members every Wednesday at Streetscape in Paseo Saturnino, Maria Luisa Park and Saturday at Axis Entertainment along Escario St., but they will be at UP Cebu during the week of the Earth Day celebration.

Healthy lifestyle

The second day of the festival will also feature a bazaar for selling or bartering pre-loved items, family cookout fair, picnic and play area, education booths, and vegetarian food stalls, said Anne Dala of the Cebu Food Revolution.

She added that Earth Day Cebu organizers “want to reach out to others so that together we can do something to protect our planet.”

Roza Javier, also of the Cebu Food Revolution, said they want to encourage a healthy lifestyle among families by stressing the importance of home cooking and sharing what they know about preparing tasty vegetarian dishes.

CFM and Cebu Food Revolution are co-organizers of the celebration.

Earth Day festivities will happen from 8 a.m. – 11 p.m. on the second day, and guests will only need to pay an entrance fee of P20. Earth Day Cebu is part of a global series of events in celebration of Earth Day 2017.

‘Road sharing’ as radical fix for climate change pushed in new Oposa book

Life-long lessons in appreciating the Earth’s gifts and how to do battle to conserve the sea, air and land come together in a different kind of book by environment lawyer Tony Oposa.

“Shooting Stars and Dancing Fish” was written as a picture-and-story book with young persons and decision-makers in mind. Climate change, according to Oposa, isn’t real to many people despite its disastrous impact seen in more intense storms, wacky weather patterns and sea-level rise. The crisis gets lost in jargon and the notion that this is someone else’s problem to fix.

Mind shift

“I’m just a storyteller more than a legal brawler,” he likes to say with his fourth book.

Oposa tackles the problem with essays and poetry, full-color photos, paintings and fun illustrations.

He also calls for a mind shift from wasteful consumption to “CPR Economics” that fosters Conservation, Protection and Restoration. At the end of the book, he invites readers to “paint the future” they want to see.

The 262-page book is published by the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) and designed by Cebu creative studio Happy Garaje. The soft-cover book is reader-friendly with its handy square size, eye-catching visuals and prose that makes complex concepts simple.

Shooting Stars and Dancing Fish” was written as a picture-and-story book with young persons and decision-makers in mind.

Launch, book signing

The launch and book signing is set at 4 p.m. of March 17, Friday, at Casino Español in Cebu City. Retired Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr. and Durwood Zaelke, president of the Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development in Washington D.C., will grace the event with COO Dominica Chua representing RAFI.

Earlier at 2 p.m., at the same venue, the Office of the Ombudsman and Department of Environment and Natural Resources will launch “Pasalamat sa Katauhan”, a nationwide program to recognize individuals and groups that have made significant contributions to a “balanced and healthful ecology.” Oposa helped set up the program in his role as Special Counsel to the Office of the Environmental Ombudsman.

Some highlights of the book:

  • Why developed nations are “OC” or Over-Consuming countries that should not be admired or copied
  • Road sharing or “Bayanihan sa Daan” to solve traffic congestion
  • Why the car is a “metal monster” feeding global warming
  • Stories of CPR Economics or models around the world
  • Personal notes on Oposa’s legal battles over illegal logging, the Manila Bay reclamation, fishponds in Laguna Lake, Bantayan beach encroachment, and other disputes
  • How youths and ordinary citizens can support the International Climate Justice Movement

Oposa is the 2009 recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay Award for his pioneer work in environmental law.

Overseas Filipinos coming home for the Sinulog 2017 celebration now have access to the Balik Cebu booth at Ayala Center Cebu starting today, January 4, 2017, to help them with festival-related activities.

Local government executives led by Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale and Cebu City Councilor Margot Osmeña led the opening of the booth, which is one component of the Balik Cebu program.

Tetta Baad, chair of the Balik Cebu committee, said two welcome activities are planned at the Mactan Cebu International Airport for overseas Filipinos arriving in January 11 and 12.

A grand welcome dinner for balikbayans is also scheduled for January 12 at The Terraces in Ayala Center Cebu.

Now on its 16th year, the Balik Cebu program has seen an increasing number of Cebuanos and other Filipinos coming to Cebu to celebrate the Sinulog Festival.

According to Baad, the venue for the welcome dinner only has maximum capacity of 500 and tickets for this event had been sold out the past two Sinulog celebrations.

“There has been a clamor for additional tickets but we simply can’t accommodate more,” she added. The main requests of guests during the welcome dinner usually pertain to Visayan songs and dances.

Fluvial parade

Aside from the regular Sinulog activities that they look forward to during their visit, balikbayans also now clamor to join the fluvial parade, said Tourism Congress vice president for travel and tours Alice Queblatin.

To make the experience more festive for guests, Queblatin said they decorate the boats, hire Sinulog dancers and drumbeaters, and narrate the story behind the fluvial procession.

Travelogue schedule

With MyEventology’s Travelogue, which is happening from December 16-18, 2016 at SM Seaside City Cebu, Christmas gifts can come in the form of airline tickets, hotel or resort stays, sunset and other cruises, wellness voucher, or even domestic and international tour packages, Villahermosa added.

The three-day travel expo will have over 40 exhibitors showcasing the different attractions and destinations in the Philippines and other countries.

Bluewater Resorts, Costabella Tropical Beach Hotel, Kandaya Resort, Be Resorts, Sheridan Beach Resort and Spa are among the Travelogue exhibitors.

Gift of travel

Villahermosa said Travelogue, coined from travel in a catalogue, provides a lot of options for travel as a Christmas gift. Packages will be for travel on the peak months from January to June in 2017.

“How can you give someone the gift of travel and place it under a tree? Some tips: make sure the gift is open-dated and that it can be changed,” she said.

International destinations on sale during Travelogue will include tour packages to Taiwan, China, Dubai, Europe, and the Middle East from partner travel agencies.

A love story for the ages highlighted SM City Consolacion’s tree lighting ceremony last Sunday, November 6, 2016, to mark the start of the festive Christmas season in Cebu.

Dancers recreated the soldier and ballerina’s happy ending in a Castle of Magic put up as backdrop to the huge Christmas tree that now dominates the Event Center of SM City Consolacion.

Toy soldiers and graceful ballerinas wowed the crowd with their performance shortly before the Christmas tree lit up with a myriad of colors.

“Christmas is a season filled with colors, lights, and a whole lot of happiness. This year, we are adding a whimsical touch to the most awaited time of the year through our Castle of Magic,” said SM City Consolacion assistant mall manager Estrella I. Wamilda.

Scenic lights placed around the Event Center and elevator add to the festive spirit of the season.

To spread the Christmas joy and cheer as widely as possible, SM Consolacion also launched the Bears of Joy.

This Halloween, scream all you can at the series of spine-tingling, hair-raising horror flicks at the first-ever outdoor movie cinema at The Mactan Newtown in Lapu-Lapu City.

Dubbed as “Fright Night,” the Newtown Outdoor Cinema will feature three of the all-time best horror movies this coming October 30 (Sunday), from 5 pm onwards.

The Newtown Outdoor Cinema is Cebu’s first-ever outdoor cinema open to the public, which is located beside The Mactan Alfresco. This will offer a new experience for the family and friends to celebrate Halloween, the company said.

Biggest business, tourism hub

Aside from the free outdoor cinema, The Mactan Newtown brings a plethora of exciting spooky adventures and fun activities day and night for the Halloween celebration this year. This 30-hectare township with a beach is poised to be the biggest business and tourism hub in Central Visayas that imbibes Megaworld’s phenomenal Live-Work-Play-Learn concept.

What’s new is that the beach, the 11.5-hectare beachfront property area of The Mactan Newtown is now open to the public and can let you enjoy water activities such as Stand Up Paddling, Jet Skis, Banana Boat and more, or relax with family and friends while appreciating the white sand shores and unparalleled views of the Hilutungan Channel and Magellan Bay. Open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., you can already have a fun day under the sun for only P150 on weekdays and P199 on weekends.

The Mactan Newtown

OUTDOOR CINEMA. The Newtown Outdoor Cinema located in The Mactan Newtown in Lapu-Lapu City will feature three of the all-time best horror movies this coming October 30, from 5 pm onwards. It is the 1st-ever outdoor movie cinema in Cebu.

Where to go in Mactan Newtown

Guests and visitors can also visit The Mactan Alfresco, which is the newest dining hub in Mactan that offers a myriad of delectable food finds, which are unique to the island. Patterned after Singapore’s hawker centers, The Mactan Alfresco gives diners a whole new way of experiencing at the world-famous Cebu lechon with its very own Lechon Pit that opens until 10 p.m. There are also live colorful performances every weekend at the area where it showcases the best Cebuano culture and tradition.

After a movie marathon, you can have some downtime along or with someone at the slew of coffee shops inside the township. The Civet Coffee, located at the ground floor of Manulife Tower, has a different ambiance. It is a mainstream coffee shop but with a homey feel with grey tile flooring, wooden furniture and warm lights.

Beside the Coffee shop is Mister Donut which also offers affordable coffee blend in the neighborhood. If you need a quick stop to eat, McDonald’s and 7/11 store are also there where you can have your own comfort food.

Showing at the Newtown Outdoor Cinema are three highly-rated picks:

It

Based on a 1986 horror novel by great master of horror fiction Stephen King, “It” is a mind-boggling classic film, set in a fictitious town of Derry, Maine, which follows the experience of seven children as they are being terrorized by unknown shape-shifting being (referred to simply as eponymous “It”), which often appears to be as Pennywise The Clown.

The Ring

The Ring is a 2002 American supernatural psychological horror film based on the novel of Koji Suzuki. The plot revolves around the urban legend of a cursed videotape, which victimizes anyone in a week after viewing it. This highest grossing film is famous for its bizarre and haunting image of a white lady with long black hair that lurks out the television set.

The Purge

In order to stabilize the American society, a new government was formed and the new founding fathers declared to hold an annual 12-hour event known as “The Purge,” wherein all crime including murder becomes legal while emergency and law enforcement services are shut down. The Purge is the first of the three American dystopian horror films written and directed by James DeMonaco. (Press Release)

A woman’s face, a veil covering her hair and part of her face, began to emerge from the black pad of Dr. Nanette N. Catigbe, as she put chalk to paper stroke by stroke at the ongoing National Bookstore Color and Calligraphy Fair Cebu in SM City Cebu.

It was ordinary chalk, she told her amazed audience, similar to the cylindrical short stubs teachers used in school but turned into a drawing tool.

Catigbe said she loves Stabilo’s CarbOthello chalk-pastel colored pencils because they’re so easy to use and blend.

The Stabilo brand is just one of the many exhibitors at the NBS Color and Calligraphy Fair Cebu, which is ongoing today and tomorrow at the Northwing Atrium of SM City Cebu.

Coloring and drawing pens, colored and mechanical pencils, water colors, a range of markers, and paper products for drawing, coloring, and calligraphy from such brands as Caran D’ Ache, Sennelier, Chameleon, Stabilo, Pilot, Sakura, Marvy, Uni, Titus, Faber-Castell, Dong-A, Fabriano and Acquarello are on display and being sold at the fair. Some of these products are only available at National Bookstore. They can be bought at NBS even after the fair.

Uni Color and Calligraphy Fair Cebu

UNI. Joseph Aquino, national sales manager of Lopell Marketing, demonstrates the many innovations of Uni, including liquid chalk markers and white colored gel pens, a power tank pen that can write underwater, smoothest pen called the Jetstream, and an anti-check washing pen.

Calligraphy, coloring activities

The activities today, October 22, focus on calligraphy while Sunday ‘s events will revolve around coloring, said National Bookstore public relations and social media officer JB Roperos.

On Saturday, events included a live mural event, calligraphy demos by Limelight, Marvy Uchida, Uni Ball Air, Zig Kuretake, Fabriano, and Faber-Castell, creative lettering by Stabilo, blackletter demo by Pilot, emboss flourishing by Zig Kuretake and Tsukineko, and brush marker demo by Sakura.

Sennelier Color and Calligraphy Fair Cebu

SENNELIER. Pher Mendoza, brand manager of National Bookstore, shows bloggers and lifestyle writers Sennelier products, which they exclusively distribute in the Philippines.

Art materials, brands

Pher Mendoza, brand manager of National Bookstore, said they are the official seller of the Sennelier products in the Philippines. They also carry the Swiss brand Caran D’ Ache, which carries felt-tip and water-soluble pens, permanent markers, and an artist line of materials called Pablo because these products were used by that great master Picasso.

At the Pilot booth, brand staff showed off new products and bestsellers like the parallel pens for Gothic calligraphy and G-Tec-C4 pens, which are now produced in several colors.

May Janine Ferrano, brand manager of Marvy Uchida, said they have materials for drawing, calligraphy, and fabric marking. Their acrylic pen markers can be used on fabric, wood, glass, and ceramics.

SHARPIE. You save if you buy it as a set.

Writing, paper products

Uni innovations, meanwhile, now span a wide range of products. Joseph Aquino, national sales manager of Lopell Marketing, said they’re the only brand with liquid chalk markers and white colored gel pens, which come in extra or standard white, a power tank pen that can write underwater, smoothest pen called the Jetstream, and an anti-check washing pen. The ink won’t disappear even when it is soaked in a chemical mixture.

Among the paper products are brands carried by Prestige Paper Products and Limelight. Lovely Yap said they distribute the Fabriano and Acquarello brands in the Philippines. Their specialty is paper for different art mediums and they both have white and black sketch pads. Limelight sells sketchbooks of acid-free cream paper and polyurethane cover.

Ayala Center Cebu celebrates wellness this Pink October, now on on its 8th year, as it takes the first steps in promoting healthy living with “Think Pink, Live Pink.” The first mall to embrace the cause, Ayala Center Cebu is giving everyone a chance to help raise awareness and support hundreds of breast cancer patients nationwide this Pink October.

1) Have your car washed

Contribute to the pink cause by having your car washed at the Basement Parking this month. In partnership with NDG Valet Innovators & Specialists, a portion of every car wash during Pink October goes to the ICanServe Foundation. Coupons are available at the main mall concierge and start at P170 for compact cars with P70 out of each carwash fee going to the beneficiary.

Early detection is key. Cebu deserves fine quality wine and Bibendum Wines aims to provide Cebuanos access to a wide selection of French, American, and New World bottles with the recent opening of another branch in the wine cellar of The Tinder Box.

Margaret Taylor, Bibendum Wines proprietor, said they carry a range of reasonably priced to very expensive bottles from such countries as France, USA, Spain, Australia, and South Africa for that everyday glass or important occasion.

“Cebu deserves the same quality of wine as Manila. We have the largest selection in the Visayas and Mindanao. I’m quite proud to say we also have a collection of expensive wines. Our wines are quite good because we store them carefully,” she said.

Bibendum Wine Cellars

Bibendum is able to maintain the exemplary quality of wines they import by utilizing refrigerated containers and climate-controlled facilities, including vinecaves, all throughout the shipping and storing process, according to Taylor’s son Hans Eulenhofer.

Bibendum Wines has been the go-to shop for fine wines in Central and Southern Philippines since 2012. Aside from a store at Streetscape on Maria Luisa Road that opened in early 2016, the Bibendum Wine Cellars at The Tinder Box in Banilad is now open as well.

QUALITY WINES. Bibendum Wines made it easy for people to pick their wines by providing a point system and brief descriptions.

With so many kinds to choose from, it might seem a bit daunting to pick the perfect bottle. Taylor said they’ve made it easy by providing a point system and brief descriptions. Bibendum Wines places the ratings by professional wine critics beneath the wine bottles.

“Everything is labelled. Anything with rating of over 85 is very good and over 90, super excellent. We’ve arranged our wines by sector to make it easy for our customers,” she said.

Best-selling wines

There are shelves of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Rose, and Riesling, to name a few. A great selection of quality wine falls within the P350-P550 price range, added Taylor.

According to Taylor, the Margaux, priced over P40,000, and Bordeaux wines are among the most expensive in the Bibendum Wines collection.

NEW WINE CELLAR. Bibendum Wines proprietor Margaret Taylor (left) and son Hans Eulenhofer talks about wines in a press preview of their cellar at The Tinder Box.

Eulenhofer said their best-selling wines are of the Haussmann and Kressmann brands. “These are wine houses in France and they carry different varieties. What makes them popular is the consistent taste of their wines. The taste profile is the same year on year,” he said.

Taylor said Cebuanos also love the Riesling by the Chateau Ste. Michelle winery.

Eulenhofer said customers can either purchase wine to take home with them or to a party, or they can buy a glass or bottle to enjoy at The Tinder Box.

They can also buy by the glass at the Bibendum Wines Cellars through the enomatic machine, which has up to 12 different kinds available.

It also delivers right to a customer’s doorstep through Food Panda or its website at www.bibendumwines.com.

Bibendum Wine Cellars at The Tinder Box is open Sunday-Thursday from 8 am to 11 pm and Friday-Saturday from 8 am to 12 midnight.
