Every year, Make Your Own Havaianas (MYOH) lets fans step into a different place with the fun themes that inspire the flip-flop customization experience.

It has taken everyone to colorful Brazil, sunny Hawaii, and kawaii Japan. This year, Havaianas sets foot into a different time and, hands down, one of the best decades ever – the 90s.

From music to fashion, movies to TV shows, toys and games, to slang, and the list of reasons why it was an awesome decade goes on. It was a simpler time.

#MYOH2017 commemorative pair.

2017 commemorative pair

This year’s commemorative pair is a must-have. It comes in a classic black sole with pixels, inspired by the 8-bit video games that defined the decade.

The pins also hark back to the 90. The choices include throwback icons of a TV, cassette tape, boom box, and a video game icon. There’s a pin that simply says “I ❤ 90s” for those who lived through this rad time.

#MYOH2017 pins.

#MYOH2017 pins.

Back in the day, bedrooms were a whole lot cooler if they were glow-in-the-dark. So, Havaianas has come up with glow-in-the-dark pins that come in five super fun designs: a lightning bolt, smiley, star, and lips.

Ayala Center Cebu, SM Seaside City

In Cebu, this year’s MYOH will have two legs. Head to All Flip-Flops Ayala Center Cebu on June 9 to 12 and All Flip-Flops SM Seaside City on June 15 to 18 for something very cool, or as ‘90s kids would say, totally phat. For the first time ever, Havaianas makes use of 3D printing technology that can print pins before your eyes.

Follow Havaianas Philippines on Facebook and @havaianasphils on Twitter and Instagram for updates on #MYOH2017. Plan your masterpiece ahead by mixing and matching different combos at myoh.havaianasphilippines.com. (Press Release)

In celebration of this year’s Mother’s Day, Oakridge Business Park held a SUPER MOMMIES Movie Day Out last May 14, at the Oakridge Pavilion, an event that gave mothers and kids and opportunity to bond over movie.

The afternoon activity, which gathered close to 90 moms and their kids, was a tribute for mothers of children with special needs including kids with cancer, autism, and wheelchair-dependent, among other physical disabilities. The activity aims to celebrate the strength, tenacity and resourcefulness of the mothers for having raised these children.

Oakridge with its partner organizations — Kythe Foundation; Philippine Accessible Disability Services, Inc. (PADS), particularly the disabled-people’s organization Kapunongan Alang sa May Kabilinggan sa Cordova; and Saint Martin de Porres Special School — treated these “super moms” and their kids to free popcorn, ice cream, hotdogs, and refreshments, all while watching the animated film, Brave.

Oakridge Mother's Day

MOVIE TREAT. Oakridge and its partners treated mothers of children with special needs to free popcorn, ice cream, hotdogs, and refreshments, all while watching the animated film, Brave.

Uplifting message

The movie has an uplifting message about improving communication between mothers and daughters.

Fely Tano, lead SPED teacher at Saint Martin de Porres Special School, expressed her gratitude saying the event was a great time for mothers to “enjoy and have fun” with their children.

“This will be a Mother’s Day that the moms here will never forget. Because their time is mostly consumed with taking care of their child’s needs, they often forget to relax so this event is a welcome treat for them,” Tano said.

Family-oriented activities

Oakridge is gearing up for more family-centered activities this quarter. As an inclusive community, the business park is not only family-friendly, it is also PWD- accessible.

Oakridge Business Park is a distinct business address along A.S. Fortuna Street, Mandaue City.

Oakridge Business Park is a masterfully planned dynamic park fusing business and pleasure in thoughtfully planned spaces and structures from a mix of office, event and lifestyle spaces.

Oakridge Mother's Day

HAVING FUN. Fely Tano, lead SPED teacher at Saint Martin de Porres Special School, said the event at Oakridge was a great time for mothers to “enjoy and have fun” with their children.

Balanced work-play environment

It currently houses Oakridge IT Center 1; Block Eighty Eight; the Oakridge Pavilion, an air-conditioned tent event venue; and Oakridge Horizons, a 400-seater grand ballroom for formal functions.

Oakridge Business Park adds to its growing commercial property inventory with the construction of a new 12-storey PEZA-registered building – Oakridge I.T. Center 2.

Once completed, the Oakridge expansion aims to reinforce the company’s commitment to create a well-balanced work-play environment for its BPO and office clients, while preparing to bring in more retail brands, dining choices, and entertainment and wellness facilities. (Press Release)

Cebu’s best pet-friendly mall continues to promote responsible and intelligent pet ownership through its animal-friendly facilities and pet-centered events, the biggest of which is the Pet Festival Philippines.

The grand event also celebrates the special relationship that exists between pets and their owners. “Parkmall is a family-oriented mall. Most people treat their pets like family, so it follows that Parkmall welcomes pets like family,” said Engr. Neal Carlson Co, President of Golden Great Value Properties, Inc., the company that owns and operates Parkmall.

Now on its second year, the Pet Festival Philippines on May 11-14 will gather different kinds of pets for 4 days of pet-centered exhibits and competitions to be participated by all the pet clubs, leading pet shops and animal welfare organizations, making it the biggest and most diverse assembly of its kind not just in Cebu, but in the country as well.

Parkmall

PET-FRIENDLY. Parkmall is a pet-friendly mall that promotes responsible and intelligent pet ownership. This photo taken from Parkmall’s Facebook page shows one of the activities in last year’s Pet Festival.

Animal welfare

Marking the official start of the festival on May 12 at 2PM will be a panel discussion on animal welfare and responsible pet ownership with representatives from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Agriculture, Island Rescue Organization (IRO), and Animal Wellness Veterinary Clinic.

Parkmall’s Pawshionista, Cebu’s first and most fabulous fashion competition for pets, returns with two categories: one for dogs and another for cats. This year’s theme is Summer in Bloom where participating pets will strut the runway in their floral summer wear on May 13.

This year, Parkmall is co-organizing the 1st Cebu Dog Road Run together with the K9 CARE (Cebu Agility Run Enthusiast) Dog Sport, and the 1st Royal Canin Dog Sport Challenge, three days of competitions for dogs which include the 6th Cebu Dog Sport National Competition and the 2nd Dog Agility Championship.

Race challenge

Another event highlight is Cebu’s first race challenge for dogs and their humans, the Great Pet Adventure Race in which teams of three dog and human pairs compete to accomplish the tasks in different stations around the mall in the shortest time possible.

Pet Festival Philippines will also be marked by a host of other fun activities and competitions such as the Phone Photography Contest, Creative Dry-Grooming Competition, Pet Parade, All-Breed Fun Match, United Hamster Aficionados’ Hamster Relay Race, and the Philippine Serama Competition.

The event will be for the benefit of the Island Rescue Organization (IRO), a non-profit group that rescues and rehabilitates aspins and puspins before putting them up for adoption every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month as part of Parkmall’s regular Dog Walk. IRO has been the mall’s partner in all of its pet-centered events.

In 2016, Parkmall was accredited by the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) as an animal control facility, which means that the entire Parkmall property is safe and conducive for pets. Parkmall is the only mall in Cebu to be accredited as such by BAI. This prompted Parkmall to make the move to go beyond just being pet-friendly and to recognize itself as Cebu’s only pet-loving mall as it continues to understand and cater to the needs of the pets and the pet-loving community. Located in Barangay San Isidro, PPI’s newest residential project is just 15 minutes away from the city center of Tagbilaran. Since it is right on the island of Panglao, it has easy access to world-class beaches, malls, churches, hospitals, and the new airport that is set to open soon.

Espina is confident Royal Palms Tres will do well in sales. For this project, PPI targets growing families, business start-up owners, and even investors.

The residential project will have resort-inspired amenities, including a clubhouse, swimming pool, fitness gym, and a mini-playground.

Primary Homes said in a statement that Royal Palms Tres is the epitome of world-class resort living at an affordable price. With the development’s perimeter fences and elegant entrance that is secured 24 hours daily, the security of homeowners is assured.

Guests were treated to free-flowing summer cocktails, dancing music, and smoky barbecue dishes.

The fun event was set up by the side of the pool with its inviting crystal blue water that was just too difficult to resist. Many gave in to the temptation of a refreshing dip.

Highlight fun side

Lara Scarrow, Marco Polo Plaza Cebu Director of Sales and Marketing, said the event served to highlight the El Viento Restaurant and Pool Bar that often gets overlooked because of their reputation as a business hotel.

She added that they want to show guests this part of the hotel where they can relax, dine, drink, and even take a swim. The Cafe Marco buffet already includes free use of the pool so families and friends can have fun after dining at the restaurant.

Drink, Dance & Dip was a cluster pool party that happened simultaneously in all Marco Polo properties in the Philippines, including Marco Polo Plaza Cebu, Marco Polo Ortigas Manila, and Marco Polo Davao.

Guests donned chic summer outfits over their swimwear in happy compliance with the invitation to drink, dance, and dip.

Be it mother or daughter, wife or lover, entrepreneur or business executive, best friend or mentor, women play multiple roles on a daily basis and Fitflop promises to be there for them every step of the way.

Fitflop, which recently celebrated 10 years of providing superwomen with great footwear, aims to give them the energy and confidence to go further and be absolutely prepared for whatever their busy lives may throw at them, said its global marketing director Louise Barnes during the Manila leg of a series of events known as #SuperWomenNights.

She added that as the brand marks the start of another decade, it comes out with a wide range of products that now includes a whole new category of footwear.

WIDE RANGE. Fitflop global marketing director Louise Barnes (right) said that as the brand marks the start of another decade, it comes out with a wide range of products that now includes a whole new category of footwear – athletic catergory.

New Fitflop products

“We’re entering the athletic category in a big way and we’re doing that with lightweight sneakers and ballerinas. We’ve developed brand new products that will change the way you think of Fitflop,” Barnes said.

According to her, the new Fitflop products are super light, anatomically contoured to cover the feet and have front and back cushioning, and come in a host of beautiful bold and bright colors. This is made possible by Fitflop’s all-new trademark iQushion technology, which is a micro-bubble foam impact cushion.

Fitflop has sold over 35 million pairs of shoes and is now in 63 countries, added Barnes, citing that the whole idea of the brand was about empowering women.

“Our founder Marcia Kilgore, she’s really our original superwoman. She strongly believes in supporting women from the ground up with great footwear,” Barnes said.

Brand milestones

FitFlop regional brand manager Melody Tanjimenez said the brand celebrates several milestones in 2017: its 10th year anniversary, launch of the Spring-Summer Collection, a million Facebook followers just in Southeast Asia alone.

She added that the brand’s growth was an incredible milestone especially since it only had a small following in Multiply when it started in 2007.

“They believed in the brand and we were able to build the brand to what it is today through them,” Tanjimenez also said.

FitFlop Superwomen campaign

#ForSuperwomen. The company brought in the Southeast Asian winners of the #ForSuperwomen promo, a social media contest that asked Fitflop lovers to nominate the superwomen in their lives, to the regional launch of the #SuperwomenNights in Manila in March.

Southeast Asian markets

Tanjimenez said the Primer Group of Companies, which distributes the Fitflop brands in Southeast Asia, also has its own milestones.

The first Fitflop free standing store it opened back in 2010 at the SM Mall of Asia has grown to 30 stores across its Southeast Asian markets.

Primer Group distributes Fitflop footwear in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Brunei, Myanmar, and the Philippines

Superwomen campaign

Fitflop is working with Uma Thurman, the brand’s first celebrity ambassador, for the spring-summer 2017 collection and the superwomen campaign.

Barnes said they picked Thurman because she is also an advocate of women empowerment and her values are aligned with that of the brand.

“She (Thurman) absolutely embodies strength, confidence, total control. She is also a multitasking mother of three and represents iconic characters on stage,” she further said.

Contest winners

It also brought in the Southeast Asian winners of the #ForSuperwomen promo, a social media contest that asked Fitflop lovers to nominate the superwomen in their lives, to the regional launch of the #SuperwomenNights in Manila.

In a toast to the winners, Camille Karaan, vice president for Primer International Management Ltd., said that for superwomen, everything is possible.

“We have superwomen all around us. They are mothers, sisters, friends, and even strangers,” she added.

Local arts and crafts, bazaars, an e-bike parade, organic farmers’ market, food booths, and live music will mark the holding of the Earth Day celebration in Cebu from April 21-22, 2017 at the University of the Philippines Cebu Campus.

This will be the third year that Earth Day is celebrated in Cebu, and it carries the theme “Pag-amuma sa Inahang Kalikopan,” said Japamala Arnaldo of Art Cebu.

Art Cebu is one of the organizers of Earth Day Cebu, which advocates for a healthy lifestyle and greener environment. The goal of the event is to build a community that has a high awareness of climate change and other environmental threats to the planet.

Arnaldo calls on Cebuanos to join the celebration and enjoy the activities they’ve lined up for the two days.

Earth Day highlights

A panel discussion by various climate speakers, including Prof. Henry Espiritu of PCAP, Jakki Lucero of Climate Reality Project, Dada Dharmavedananda of PROUT and Ecology, JCI Cebu Sinulo, and Francis Sollano of Youth for Livable Cebu at UP Cebu’s AS Conference Hall, will happen on the first day, April 21. It will run from 1:30-4:00 p.m. and end with a fellowship meal in the form of a vegetarian boodle fight.

One of the highlights of Earth Day will be the Cebu Farmers Market (CFM) on the second day, April 22.

On that day, according to Ma. Rowena Clara Ebdani of CFM, Cebu’s organic farmers will sell naturally grown local produce at the UP Cebu Campus grounds.

CFM already holds a regular market for farmer members every Wednesday at Streetscape in Paseo Saturnino, Maria Luisa Park and Saturday at Axis Entertainment along Escario St., but they will be at UP Cebu during the week of the Earth Day celebration.

Healthy lifestyle

The second day of the festival will also feature a bazaar for selling or bartering pre-loved items, family cookout fair, picnic and play area, education booths, and vegetarian food stalls, said Anne Dala of the Cebu Food Revolution.

She added that Earth Day Cebu organizers “want to reach out to others so that together we can do something to protect our planet.”

Roza Javier, also of the Cebu Food Revolution, said they want to encourage a healthy lifestyle among families by stressing the importance of home cooking and sharing what they know about preparing tasty vegetarian dishes.

CFM and Cebu Food Revolution are co-organizers of the celebration.

Earth Day festivities will happen from 8 a.m. – 11 p.m. on the second day, and guests will only need to pay an entrance fee of P20. Earth Day Cebu is part of a global series of events in celebration of Earth Day 2017.

‘Road sharing’ as radical fix for climate change pushed in new Oposa book

Life-long lessons in appreciating the Earth’s gifts and how to do battle to conserve the sea, air and land come together in a different kind of book by environment lawyer Tony Oposa.

“Shooting Stars and Dancing Fish” was written as a picture-and-story book with young persons and decision-makers in mind. Climate change, according to Oposa, isn’t real to many people despite its disastrous impact seen in more intense storms, wacky weather patterns and sea-level rise. The crisis gets lost in jargon and the notion that this is someone else’s problem to fix.

Mind shift

“I’m just a storyteller more than a legal brawler,” he likes to say with his fourth book.

Oposa tackles the problem with essays and poetry, full-color photos, paintings and fun illustrations.

He also calls for a mind shift from wasteful consumption to “CPR Economics” that fosters Conservation, Protection and Restoration. At the end of the book, he invites readers to “paint the future” they want to see.

The 262-page book is published by the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) and designed by Cebu creative studio Happy Garaje. The soft-cover book is reader-friendly with its handy square size, eye-catching visuals and prose that makes complex concepts simple.

Shooting Stars and Dancing Fish” was written as a picture-and-story book with young persons and decision-makers in mind.

Launch, book signing

The launch and book signing is set at 4 p.m. of March 17, Friday, at Casino Español in Cebu City. Retired Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr. and Durwood Zaelke, president of the Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development in Washington D.C., will grace the event with COO Dominica Chua representing RAFI.

Earlier at 2 p.m., at the same venue, the Office of the Ombudsman and Department of Environment and Natural Resources will launch “Pasalamat sa Katauhan”, a nationwide program to recognize individuals and groups that have made significant contributions to a “balanced and healthful ecology.” Oposa helped set up the program in his role as Special Counsel to the Office of the Environmental Ombudsman.

Some highlights of the book:

  • Why developed nations are “OC” or Over-Consuming countries that should not be admired or copied
  • Road sharing or “Bayanihan sa Daan” to solve traffic congestion
  • Why the car is a “metal monster” feeding global warming
  • Stories of CPR Economics or models around the world
  • Personal notes on Oposa’s legal battles over illegal logging, the Manila Bay reclamation, fishponds in Laguna Lake, Bantayan beach encroachment, and other disputes
  • How youths and ordinary citizens can support the International Climate Justice Movement

Oposa is the 2009 recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay Award for his pioneer work in environmental law.

Local government executives led by Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale and Cebu City Councilor Margot Osmeña led the opening of the booth, which is one component of the Balik Cebu program.

Tetta Baad, chair of the Balik Cebu committee, said two welcome activities are planned at the Mactan Cebu International Airport for overseas Filipinos arriving in January 11 and 12.

A grand welcome dinner for balikbayans is also scheduled for January 12 at The Terraces in Ayala Center Cebu.

Now on its 16th year, the Balik Cebu program has seen an increasing number of Cebuanos and other Filipinos coming to Cebu to celebrate the Sinulog Festival.

According to Baad, the venue for the welcome dinner only has maximum capacity of 500 and tickets for this event had been sold out the past two Sinulog celebrations.

“There has been a clamor for additional tickets but we simply can’t accommodate more,” she added. The main requests of guests during the welcome dinner usually pertain to Visayan songs and dances.

Fluvial parade

Aside from the regular Sinulog activities that they look forward to during their visit, balikbayans also now clamor to join the fluvial parade, said Tourism Congress vice president for travel and tours Alice Queblatin.

To make the experience more festive for guests, Queblatin said they decorate the boats, hire Sinulog dancers and drumbeaters, and narrate the story behind the fluvial procession.

With USJ-R Intern Shyn Canonigo

Today’s young people prefer meaningful experiences over material possessions, and Travelogue by MyEventology makes it easier to grant them their wish this Christmas.

Stephanie Villahermosa, MyEventology project director, said one good gift for millennials is that of travel.

“Material things will break, be forgotten, or become obsolete,” she cited, adding that beautiful memories last a lifetime.

Travelogue schedule

With MyEventology’s Travelogue, which is happening from December 16-18, 2016 at SM Seaside City Cebu, Christmas gifts can come in the form of airline tickets, hotel or resort stays, sunset and other cruises, wellness voucher, or even domestic and international tour packages, Villahermosa added.

Travelogue

GIFT OF TRAVEL. With Travelogue, you can give as Christmas gifts airline tickets, hotel or resort stays, sunset and other cruises, wellness voucher, or even domestic and international tour packages, said MyEventology project director Stephanie Villahermosa.

The three-day travel expo will have over 40 exhibitors showcasing the different attractions and destinations in the Philippines and other countries.

Bluewater Resorts, Costabella Tropical Beach Hotel, Kandaya Resort, Be Resorts, Sheridan Beach Resort and Spa are among the Travelogue exhibitors.

Gift of travel

Villahermosa said Travelogue, coined from travel in a catalogue, provides a lot of options for travel as a Christmas gift. Packages will be for travel on the peak months from January to June in 2017.

“How can you give someone the gift of travel and place it under a tree? Some tips: make sure the gift is open-dated and that it can be changed,” she said.

International destinations on sale during Travelogue will include tour packages to Taiwan, China, Dubai, Europe, and the Middle East from partner travel agencies.

SM Seaside PR Officer Jasmine Vailoces talks about the event that will be held in their mall.
